New Bedford Sports Club founded in New Bedford, MA in 1973
New Bedford Sports Soccer is based out of the New Bedford Sports Club located in New Bedford, MA. New Bedford Sports has a long history of soccer in the South Coast area. New Bedford Sports Club was one of the founding member clubs in the Luso American Soccer Association (LASA) in 1973. Over the years New Bedford Sports fielded some successful teams aging from juniors to Veterans. Towards the ends of the 90's, the soccer programs at New Bedford Sports Club were disbanded.
In 2002, after several years of not having a soccer team, club member Carlos Sousa was asked to bring back a soccer program to New Bedford Sports. In the spring 2003, New Bedford Sports entered a senior team in the New Bedford Spanish League. After a bit of a struggle in the first half of the season, the team finished their season with 2 trophies! New Bedford Sports were crowned playoff champions and were successful in beating the league champions to win the New Bedford Spanish League Super Cup!
In 2004, New Bedford Sports entered a veterans team to play in the veteran's division in the New England Luso American Soccer Association (NELASA). The hard work of the players and team directors over the last few years culminated last year when New Bedford Sports was invited to play in a Veteran's Tournament on the Azores Islands to compete against Portugal's Benfica's and Sporting's Veteran's. This tournament, which was hosted by the legendary Eusebio, was the highlight of a week long tour of the island of Sao Miguel which also included friendlys against several local teams.
Since the return of the soccer program to New Bedford Sports Club, NBSC has continued to field a soccer team each year in one age group or another.
This season, NBSC will again field two teams:
Seniors Adult team will compete in the LUSA Soccer League
Over-40 team will compete in the Rhode Island Soccer League. Division A
